Hi! I’m Jess :)

I’ve been gardening since the first grade, when my parents gave me my own plot to tend in our backyard. I planted a butterfly bush, and quickly fell in love with nurturing a living organism, and the microcosm I discovered above and below the soil. I befriended every slug, butterfly, honey bee, and worm that crossed my path. Since then, my passion has shifted to houseplants, with an emphasis on Aroids.
In 2023, I walked into a maker's market, and asked them where they got their plants. Within about 10 minutes, the idea for "Little Root" - named because of my love for propagation and the zeal I experience when I see that first "little root" emerge - was hatched, and I began selling at that maker's market the next week!
I "handmake" about 75% of my soil by tending multiple indoor vermicomposts, rejuvenating "spent" soil, and hand preparing “orchid bark” for chunky soils from found (and sterilized!) wood. I also love to find and repurpose "non pots" - such as tooth brush holders, decorative teapots, mugs, candle stick holders, etc. - to use in my indoor garden.
Additionally, I maintain a clean up crew for my salamander and crested gecko, breeding isopods and springtails, as well as creating my own leaf litter!

Below are not all the critters in my compost who work hard to create my “black gold,” but the three you’ll see are definitely some of the superstars! From time to time, you may be able to purchase some of these pals from me, grown and raised right here in Denver, Colorado!
Check out my blog (coming soon) to learn more about these heroes!
